My work as a forensics journalist

There have been many memorable moments during our work on the Ukraine war. One of the most recent was when we were able to verify a video that showed a Russian soldier confessing to being deployed in Ukraine. This was an important moment as it helped confirm what many people had long suspected – that Russia has troops operating in Ukraine.

Another memorable moment was when we managed to track down the location of a secret military base in Russia that is believed to be used for training Ukrainian rebels. This was a difficult investigation but it ultimately led to us providing crucial evidence to help prove that Russia is arming and supporting the rebels.

Finally, one of the most powerful moments during our work came when we spoke to a woman who had lost her husband in the war. She told us about how she found out he had died and how she is struggling to cope with his loss. Her story really brought home the human cost of this conflict and emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution.

We use a variety of OSINT techniques to verify, investigate and explain global news stories.

First, we use social media monitoring to track what is being said about a particular story or event. This allows us to quickly see if there is any new information or developments that we need to be aware of.

Second, we use online search engines to find relevant information and documents that can help corroborate or refute claims made in the news story.

Finally, we also make use of public records and data when available to help add context and background information to a story.

Working as a forensics team has definitely changed our perspective on current events. We’ve become much more aware of the importance of verifying information and checking sources before reporting on anything. We’ve also learned a lot about how to investigate stories and find the facts that others might miss.

We think it’s important for everyone to be aware of the potential for fake news and propaganda, especially when it comes to topics like war or politics. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotion of a story without thinking about whether or not it’s actually true. That’s why we always try to look at things from multiple angles and check everything against our own standards of evidence before passing judgment.

Overall, we believe that our work as a forensics team has made us better journalists and more responsible citizens. We hope that by sharing some of what we’ve learned, we can help others do the same.
