Brittney Griner and Her Captivity in Russian Prison

It’s been a little over a week since Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia for possession of marijuana. The 23-year-old basketball star, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, was in Moscow with her team for a preseason game when she was taken into custody. She spent three days in jail before being released on bail and is now awaiting trial. If convicted, she could face up to six years in prison.

The incident has sparked outrage among many Americans, who see it as yet another example of the unfair treatment of athletes who use marijuana. Griner is far from the first athlete to be punished for using the drug; last year, San Francisco 49ers player Josh Gordon was suspended for an entire season after testing positive for marijuana. But unlike Gordon, Griner isn’t even accused of using marijuana during her sport’s season; she says she only used it to relieve stress while on vacation in Colorado.

Many believe that Griner should not have to suffer any consequences for her actions. They point out that marijuana is legal in some states and argue that athletes should not be penalized for using a substance that is increasingly seen as harmless. Some have even started a petition calling on the Russian government to release Griner and drop all charges against her.

Others, however, believe that Griner deserves whatever punishment she receives. They argue that she knew Possession of any amount of drugs is illegal in Russia and say that she should have been more careful given her high profile status as a professional athlete. They also point out that other countries have much stricter laws against drug use than the United States and say that American athletes should expect to be held to the same standards when they travel abroad
